FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

On August 11, 2016, state lawmakers went before the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration with a highly publicized petition to loosen federal restrictions on cannabis. With little deliberation, the DEA rejected the petition, maintaining the drug's decades-old Schedule I classification, alongside heroin and PCP, on the stated basis of cannabis having "no accepted medical use". Enter THE GREEN STANDARD: a people's account of pot, prejudice, and the fight to end prohibition. Filmed for over a year throughout the United States, the documentary introduces you to the men, women, and children on all sides of the issue and takes you inside their world of surprising highs and uncomfortable lows. From the refugee families of Colorado seeking treatment for their afflicted children to staunch anti-legalization activists decrying the entire movement as greed-fueled hype, the film offers an unflinching look at America's evolving perceptions of marijuana use, the untold societal and monetary costs of prohibition, and how legalization might (or might not) bring about change and relief.
