John Murphy Sr. has recently gotten out of prison for the involuntary manslaughter of his wife as the result of a drunk driving accident. As he struggles to get his life back together he learns that his mother in law Rhonda did not prove to be a worthy guardian for his then four year old son Johnny Jr. and subsequently the state took him away and granted legal custody to his now adopted parents David and Jennifer Collins. As John attempts to come to terms with the addiction that destroyed his past he questions what's best for his son who is now eight years old and showing great potential as a talented young violinist. John seeks guidance from Sal, the woman who helped raise him when he was a troubled youth and ultimately learns that by forgiving himself he can help save the life of his son as well as his own.
