FLORENT VOLLANT FAISEUR DE MAKUSHAM / Canada (Québec) / U.S. PREMIERE

This film by Gaspé native Éli Laliberté paints a sensitive, original portrait and looks back on the journey of Innu singer-songwriter Florent Vollant, born in Labrador and raised in Malieotenam on the North Short in Québec. Vollant, who had to leave his family of nomadic hunters at a very young age, tells of his rage and how music became the common thread of his life. An influential artist, he became know to the general public in the mid-eighties as part of the duo Kashtin, a rock duo and one of the most commercially successful and famous music groups in First Nations history. The film explores Vollant's ardent involvement in defending the culture and sharing his passion with young Aboriginal musicians. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Artist for Peace and the Chevalier de l'order du Québec.

Florent Vollant – Faiseur de Makusham trace un portrait sensible, inédit et revient sur le parcours engagé de l’auteur-compositeur-interprète innu Florent Vollant, né au Labrador et qui a grandi à Malieotenam sur la Côte-Nord au Québec. L’auteur, qui a dû quitter très jeune sa famille de chasseurs nomades, nous parle de sa rage au cœur et comment la musique deviendra le fil conducteur de sa vie. Artiste influent, il se fait connaître au grand public au milieu des années quatre-vingt au sein du duo Kashtin; le plus important groupe musical de l’histoire des Premières Nations. Homme de cœur, il poursuivra une carrière solo. Le film nous montre également comment Florent Vollant s’implique ardemment pour défendre la culture et transmettre sa passion aux jeunes musiciens autochtones. Il est récipiendaire de nombreux prix : Artiste pour la Paix et le Gouvernement du Québec l’a nommé récemment Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec.
