This film was inspired by appalling events that took place in residential schools and the horrors Indigenous children saw and endured.
Director Biography
Shane Kelsey is Anishinaabe and part of the lynx clan. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in Vancouver and Montreal. Having been raised in the city, he was influenced in early life by hip hop and rap music. He freestyled with friends on a regular basis while learning the art of rapping, and later came to writing his own lyrics. When he reconnected with his old friend the “Curse”, they decided to form “Northern Collection” and officially became a group in June of 2012. Shane’s directorial debut with Wapikoni was in 2014 when he directed his first of three music videos for his hip-hop music project Northern Collection. Shane is passionate about both music and cinema. He currently studies cinema at the University of Toronto and plans to pursue a film career.
