The Republic of Kiribati, consisting of 32 atolls and reef islands in the central Pacific Ocean straddling the equator, faces the unstoppable rise of the sea, which will engulf the nation before long. The people of Kiribati will soon be “climate change refugees.” Can these people survive if their country disappears?

Matthieu is a producer, curator, photographer and director, and is also president of the World Press Photo event in Montreal. A visual anthropologist by training, for ten years his passion for photography and ethnology has led him across the globe to photograph cultural and human diversity.
