FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

Twenty-one-year-old Ben is on a journey with his TV-obsessed Dad to explore how television consumption has evolved from one generation to the next. Where we once had appointment viewing, we now have total independence to watch what we want, when we want, and how often we want. Has the individualization of how we watch television fragmented us as a culture?

Director's Biography:

Ben Kaplan is a graduate of Media Studies from Ryerson University. He spent his time at university fixated on television production. During this time he won 'Best Pitch' for an original series, a web series development with a major broadcaster, and wrote/directed/edited a 22-minute mockumentary pilot.

During his final year, Ben earned a Los Angeles-based internship on hit IFC comedy series, Comedy Bang Bang. At this time, he also took writing courses at the Amy Poehler’s renowned, Upright Citizen’s Brigade.

Upon returning to Toronto, he landed a role at VICE Media where he has been involved as an editor for shows that air on VICELAND.

Oh and by the way, his TV-obsessed Dad drives him crazy! Dad is Marshall Jay Kaplan, an award-nominated Television Producer and Director. His shows have aired on networks such as BRAVO, TLC, History, HGTV, the Food Network, and Netflix. Marshall has been fortunate enough to direct and produce shows for celebrity talent including Tori and Dean, the late Alan Thicke, Lance Bass, Larry David, and comedian Russell Peters.

In addition to television, Marshall is the ‘cartoonist to the stars’, whereas he has drawn caricatures for no less than 10,000 celebrities including TV’s Lucille Ball, Melissa McCarthy, Jimmy Kimmel, Johnny Carson, Jon Hamm, the cast of Modern Family, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Brady Bunch, and The Office. Marshall’s caricatures have been published in newspapers across North America.

Marshall has no idea why he drives his son crazy! After all, doesn't everybody want to learn the lyrics to the Patty Duke Show?
