“Abdel is a bit like the tormented heroes in Scorsese’s films, who endure, dream, become lost, fall, and get back up again. And then, as in all film noir, there is a magical moment when the hero finds love. Often love is a woman, beautiful and poisonous. But for Abdel, love is a song. A beautiful and cruel song. In Abdel’s life, as in film noir, love transfigures the hero. Transforming him and revealing his inner self. And that’s what it is. Hearing Brel for the first time gave him a shock. After that he was no longer the same.”
